If you run a Shopify store with one to thirty employees and you’re hiring one more marketing tool this quarter, a loyalty app is often the right one. A loyalty program lifts repeat purchase rate without buying more ads, and the setup burden on a modern Shopify loyalty app is a day or two, not a quarter. The question is which app actually fits a small team, and the honest answer depends on three things: whether you need VIP tiers now or later, whether your retention stack is Klaviyo-first, and whether you sell internationally.
Who this is for
This guide is for Shopify DTC owners and founders at 1-30 employees who are picking their first loyalty app or re-evaluating a tool whose price has crept up. If you’re above roughly $1.5M in revenue, running Shopify Plus, and already managing a dedicated retention manager, LoyaltyLion and Yotpo deserve a closer look than their rank here suggests. If you’re below 100 monthly orders, start on a free tier and come back when the program has data to argue about.
Our pick: Smile.io
Smile.io is where most small Shopify stores should start a loyalty program in 2026.
The Free plan costs $0 per month and allows up to 200 orders per month. It doesn’t include VIP tiers, offers 0 integrations, and doesn’t provide API access.
That cap is the honest ceiling, but a Shopify DTC store doing 100-200 orders a month gets a real points program, a real referral program, and basic branding at no cost, which is enough evidence to decide whether loyalty is worth paying for.
The paid ladder is predictable.
Starter plan: $49/month. Capped at 500 monthly orders. Removes Smile.io branding from the launcher and panel. Adds basic customization (colors, panel copy), nudges (in-context prompts to earn or redeem), and one bonus points campaign at a time. Still no VIP tiers and no points expiry. Email customization stays minimal.
The next real jump is
Growth plan: $199/month. Capped at 2,500 monthly orders. This is where the real loyalty feature set unlocks: VIP tiers, points expiry, advanced analytics, multiple bonus campaigns, and the ability to send loyalty data into Klaviyo, Gorgias, and a handful of other integrations.
The trade-offs are real. VIP tiers and unlimited integrations only unlock at $199/month, and
Developer API access requires the $999/mo Plus plan. Brands building headless storefronts or custom data pipelines face an $800/mo premium over Growth, solely for programmatic access to their own loyalty data.
One caveat on current pricing: Smile’s own help center documents two kinds of plans in parallel,
Smile offers two types of pricing plans: Plans with a fixed order limit: Free, Essential, and Standard. Plans with dynamic usage-based pricing: Growth, Plus, and Enterprise
. Third-party sources quote entry tiers at $15, $49, and $79 across different snapshots, so confirm your exact plan name and price on smile.io/pricing before you budget.
Runner-up: Joy
If VIP tiers matter to you now, Joy is the better fit. The pricing page lays it out:
A free Starter plan plus three paid tiers, Essential $29, Advanced $129 and Ultimate $499 a month, priced by your monthly Shopify order volume, with a 14-day free trial on every paid plan.
Joy’s free Starter plan covers 250 monthly orders with points, referrals, and the loyalty widget, and the paid upgrades include a usage overage of
a small usage fee per 100 orders above your quota: $15 on Essential, $10 on Advanced, $5 on Ultimate
.
The reason to pick Joy over Smile at the paid level is a specific one.
The Advanced plan at $129/month is the first tier that unlocks VIP tiers, paid memberships, and Shopify POS. For merchants who need those three features, this is the practical minimum entry point regardless of order volume.
At $129/month, that’s $70/month less than Smile’s VIP gate and gives you paid memberships Smile doesn’t include at any tier. The ceiling is checkout:
Checkout extensions, which surface loyalty interactions directly inside the Shopify checkout flow, require the Ultimate plan at $499/month.
Budget pick for international stores: BON Loyalty
BON is the Shopify-only app in this guide and the cheapest honest paid entry point. BON’s own launch announcement sets the pricing structure:
The subscription plans will start at $0 for the Free plan, $25 for the Basic plan, $99 for Growth plan and $349 for the Professional plan.
The reason a small DTC brand picks BON over Smile or Joy at the budget tier is specifically multilingual support:
a fully customizable widget that can be tailored to match brand identities and notification emails available in over 250 languages, along with: More than 18 rewarding rules, Referral and VIP programs
. For a small store selling into EU or APAC without a translation team, that’s a real edge.
The trade-off is that VIP tiers don’t sit at the $25 tier; they live on the $99/month Growth plan, and the brand is less established than Smile or Yotpo. If you’re planning to expand to BigCommerce or Wix in the next year, Smile is the safer long-term bet.
If you already run Yotpo Reviews: Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals
The small-store case for Yotpo Loyalty is consolidation, and only consolidation. Yotpo’s own pricing page states that
pricing scales with monthly order volume. Flexible plans based on monthly order volume: Reviews & UGC from $89/month, Loyalty & Referrals free for up to 4,999 orders per month or from $199/month, and Bundle from $368/month.
The “free for up to 4,999 orders” headline is unusually generous at face value, but the paid tier most small stores actually land on is $199/month, the same price Smile charges for Growth with VIP tiers.
One structural note that matters for small retention stacks:
Following the sunset of Subscriptions in May 2025 and the deprecation of SMS and Email in December 2025, Yotpo has shifted emphasis toward its two remaining retention products: Reviews and Loyalty.
If you were counting on Yotpo as a true all-in-one for a small team, Klaviyo or a dedicated SMS tool is now a separate bill.
The enterprise option, with caveats: LoyaltyLion
LoyaltyLion is powerful, Klaviyo-friendly, and the hardest app in this list for a small team to buy with confidence, because the vendor’s own pages tell different stories. One independent breakdown of the current page states:
A free plan for up to 400 monthly orders appears on the Shopify App Store listing but not on the website, and the two pages disagree on where VIP tiers start.
On the website side, Classic is the only plan with published pricing, starting at $199/month and including 500 orders per month. Advanced and Plus are listed as custom pricing, with VIP tiers appearing on Advanced and advanced Klaviyo Events and AI Campaigns appearing on Plus.
For a 1-30 person Shopify team, the combination of a $199/month published entry price and features gated by sales conversations makes LoyaltyLion a harder match than Smile, Joy, or BON. The audience where it earns the price is a different one: established brands running sophisticated segmentation inside Klaviyo, with a retention lead and a budget that treats $199-$1,000+/month as a line item rather than a bet.
How to choose, in one minute
If you’ve never run a loyalty program, install Smile.io’s free plan, run it for a quarter, and let the numbers argue. If you know you need VIP tiers on day one and your budget caps at $150/month, Joy at $129/month is the honest route. If you sell across languages and want the cheapest serious paid tier, BON at $25/month is where to start. If you’re already paying for Yotpo Reviews, consolidate on Yotpo’s bundle. If you’re above $1.5M in revenue, Klaviyo-first, and comfortable with custom-quoted tiers, LoyaltyLion earns the conversation. One app at a time, not two.
If your retention stack is already busy, we’ve adjacent small-store guides to help you avoid double-paying: our picks for AI SMS marketing platforms for small Shopify DTC stores, AI subscription apps for small Shopify DTC stores, AI post-purchase survey apps for small Shopify DTC stores, and AI referral program software for small businesses all weigh similar small-team trade-offs. We wouldn’t run all four at once.
