If you run a Shopify store and you’ve been circling SMS for a year without pulling the trigger, you’re not alone. The category looks simple on the surface, a handful of well-known tools, and turns out to be almost impossible to price without a spreadsheet. Three cost layers (platform fee, per-message rate, and carrier pass-through) stack differently on every platform.
Who this is for
This guide is for owners and small marketing teams at Shopify DTC stores roughly in the $250K to $5M annual revenue band who want SMS to carry real weight in their customer acquisition and retention mix. If you’re pre-launch or sending fewer than a few thousand messages a month, you probably don’t need to pay for a dedicated SMS platform yet; start with the free Klaviyo tier or the free Omnisend trial credits and reassess once you have 500 opted-in subscribers. If you’re past about $5M in revenue with a mature SMS program, you’re the Attentive buyer, and this isn’t the guide for you.
Our pick: Postscript
Postscript is the SMS tool we recommend for most small Shopify DTC stores for one reason above all others:
its pricing is published to the dollar on its own pricing page, with a Starter plan at $0/month plus a $49 monthly minimum spend, $0.009/SMS, $0.045/MMS plus carrier fees, and higher tiers at Growth ($100/mo) and Professional ($500/mo)
. That transparency matters, because a small store can model the first-year bill before installing anything, which is almost impossible on any sales-quoted tool.
The second reason is Shopify depth. Postscript is Shopify-only, and it uses that constraint to build the deepest native data model in the category.
The Starter tier ships with campaigns, automations, unlimited segments, a dedicated toll-free number, and two opt-in keywords
, which is already enough to launch a welcome series, abandoned-cart recovery, and a browse-abandonment flow without upgrading.
Merchants on the App Store report strong revenue and ROI, describe setup as quick with intuitive flows for abandoned carts and welcome series, and praise the segmentation, popups, and compliance features along with deep integrations with Shopify and key apps
.
The trade-offs are real and the App Store reviews are blunt about them.
The Starter plan has a 30-day free trial, after which a $49 monthly minimum will be applied to your account
, and recent reviews flag merchants who installed Starter expecting pay-as-you-go and got surprised by the minimum. The jump from the $100/month Growth plan to the $500/month Professional plan is also steep, with little middle ground; if your send volume outgrows Growth, you absorb a $400/month base increase overnight. And Postscript is Shopify-only, so a replatform means a tool migration.
If you’re already a Shopify brand and SMS is going to be a dedicated channel on your stack, Postscript is where we’d start.
The runner-up for Klaviyo stores: Klaviyo SMS
If your email already runs on Klaviyo, the honest recommendation is to add Klaviyo SMS rather than install a second platform.
Klaviyo’s free plan includes up to 250 active profiles, 500 email sends per month, and $5 of mobile messages per month, letting a small store test both channels before upgrading
. SMS and email use the same drag-and-drop editors and the same profile data, so building a multichannel flow doesn’t require a second login.
The reason this beats running Postscript alongside Klaviyo for most small stores is simpler than any feature argument: the data lives in one profile, and smart sending across channels (which stops the same subscriber from getting both an email and a text in the same hour) just works.
Klaviyo SMS loses the top slot on two counts. Standalone Klaviyo SMS doesn’t exist; you’re also paying the active-profile email tier underneath, which climbs steeply as the list grows. And
full email support on the free plan is only available for the first 60 days
, after which free-tier users fall back on the Help Center and community.
The budget pick for email plus SMS: Omnisend
For small Shopify or WooCommerce stores that want email and SMS in one login on a tight budget, Omnisend is the pick.
The plan ladder is a $0/month Free tier for 250 sendable contacts and 500 emails, a Standard tier at $16/month (with a starter discount available), and a Pro tier at $59/month for 2,500 contacts aimed at high-volume senders who want to add SMS and advanced AI features
.
SMS runs as a volume-based add-on on the Pro plan, starting at $0.007/SMS for high-volume US sends with a minimum purchasable package of $10/month, with US rates ranging from $0.009/SMS at the $10-$49.99 level to $0.007/SMS at $10,000+
.
The important recent change:
if you subscribed to a paid Omnisend plan on or after May 4, 2026, you must be on the Pro plan to purchase an SMS Credits Subscription; Standard plan users who already had an active SMS subscription before that date can continue at legacy rates
. The net effect is that Omnisend’s SMS is now meaningfully cheaper per message than it was in 2025, but new accounts can’t access it without being on the Pro tier.
Where Omnisend trails Postscript and Klaviyo is Shopify-specific depth. If your automations lean heavily on live Shopify order events (post-purchase upsell timing, specific product-collection triggers, subscription-renewal reminders tied to Shopify Flow), the dedicated tools do more of that work without configuration. For a brand that mostly needs welcome, abandoned cart, and campaign sends across email and SMS, Omnisend is enough and costs less.
The high-volume alternative: Sendlane
Sendlane is a specific-use-case pick. If your list has grown large but a meaningful share is inactive (the classic DTC “we have 80,000 contacts but only email 20,000 of them regularly” problem), then contact-based email billing starts to feel punitive, and Sendlane’s send-based model gets interesting.
Sendlane’s email pricing starts at $100/month for 50,000 emails with unlimited profiles, deliverability monitoring, and 24/7 chat support
, and
SMS credits run $6.25 for 250 up through $175 for 10,000, with a $10/month SMS activation fee covering phone number and module setup, plus a Direct Rate SMS option at $0.009 per credit inclusive of carrier fees
.
The enterprise option (that you probably shouldn’t buy yet): Attentive
Attentive is a genuinely strong AI SMS platform, and it’s the right answer for the brand this guide isn’t aimed at.
Attentive’s Shopify App Store listing shows the app as free to install with a minimum 30-day free trial, after which month-to-month and long-term agreements are available
, and
external charges are billed by Attentive separately from your Shopify invoice
. In practice that means the true monthly cost isn’t visible until you’ve been through a sales conversation.
For a small store, that opacity is the problem. The AI tooling and the two-tap sign-up unit are legitimately better than anything else in the category, but a founder can’t model a first-year bill in a spreadsheet the way they can with Postscript or Omnisend. If you’re already at the scale where a sales cycle is a normal part of buying software, Attentive is a strong option; if you’re not, the dedicated SMS tools above are easier to commit to.
How to choose
The decision tree is short. If you already pay for Klaviyo email, add Klaviyo SMS and stop reading. If you’re not on Klaviyo and you want a dedicated SMS tool that runs under its own line item, pick Postscript. If you want email and SMS in one login on the lowest possible monthly floor, pick Omnisend Pro and add the $10 SMS pack. If your list is large but inactive and contact-based pricing is burning you, look at Sendlane. If SMS is going to be a top-three channel and you’re comfortable with a sales cycle, start the Attentive conversation.
