If your Shopify store is doing fewer than a handful of gift card orders a month, you can likely skip this entire guide. Shopify’s native gift cards are free, and in 2026 the platform also offers native store credit at checkout. The reason to install a paid app is the layer on top: scheduled delivery to a recipient, branded designs, store credit workflows, and automation like out-of-stock substitution and expiry reminders. Below is who should pay for which app, and why.
Who this is for
This guide is for small Shopify DTC stores (the one-to-thirty-person operations where the founder is still the person installing apps) thinking about gifting and store credit as a real retention and acquisition channel. If gift cards are mostly a holiday afterthought at your store, Shopify’s native product is fine. If you’re seeing enough gift card orders that the recipient experience affects your brand, or if you want refunds to stay in your store as credit rather than go back to a card, that’s when one of these four earns a monthly fee.
A note on the “AI” in the category name: the automation here’s mostly rules, scheduling, fraud screening, and expiry reminders. Rise.ai documents an AI Retention Agent inside its app that surfaces revenue opportunities. Govalo documents automatic fraud screening and out-of-stock gift card substitution. The rest is scheduling and reminders. We ranked these apps on the automation they actually document, not the word “AI” on a landing page.
Our pick: Govalo
Govalo is the gift card app we’d install first on a small Shopify DTC store that’s gifting-forward. Three reasons.
First, the entry price is honest. The Essential plan is free to install; you pay 2.9% of gift card value sold, with no monthly fee. For a store doing low gift card volume, that’s the cheapest real option on this list. You pay nothing in a slow month. If gift card revenue scales up, the Premium plan at $79/month drops the fee to 2.25% and adds a Klaviyo integration and a customized gift card redemption page. The Enterprise plan at $399/month is for stores well past small-DTC size, and it’s not the plan you should be comparing against.
Second, the recipient experience is the strongest in this group. Govalo supports scheduled send-direct-to-recipient delivery (the card arrives in the recipient’s inbox, not the buyer’s, on a date the sender chooses), personalized messages, multiple images per gift card, and branded designs. It also integrates with Recharge and Bold to let a customer gift a subscription, which no other app on this list supports.
Third, and this is the detail that would convince us on its own: Govalo will automatically substitute a gift card at checkout when a product is out of stock. A store that’s small enough to run out of a popular SKU gets a sale that would otherwise bounce. We haven’t seen another gift card app on Shopify ship this behavior.
The honest downsides. The Shopify App Store rating sits at 4.3 from 26 reviews, which is the lowest in this ranking: smaller sample, more mixed feedback than Gift Card Hero or Rise.ai. And if store credit for refunds and loyalty is your main goal, Govalo is a gift card tool, not a credit wallet. For that job, scroll down to Rise.ai.
The runner-up: Gift Card Hero
If a percentage fee makes you nervous and you’d rather pay a flat monthly cost, Gift Card Hero is the better pick. It’s Built for Shopify, carries a 4.9 rating from 176 reviews (the highest in this guide), and its pricing is the most transparent in the category.
The free-to-install plan is 2% of gift card value with a $9.99 minimum and a $49.99 ceiling per month. That ceiling is the quiet killer feature: a store selling meaningful gift card volume can’t be surprised with a four-figure fee. The $19.99/month Pro plan removes the percentage entirely and adds reloadable balances, unused-balance reminders, POS tools, and a developer API. If you’re selling physical cards or running a Shopify POS alongside your online store, Pro is the right tier.
What Gift Card Hero doesn’t do is store credit. There’s no credit wallet, no cashback campaign, no refunds-to-credit automation. For a gift-cards-only use case, this is fine. For a retention program, it’s a hole.
If store credit is the real job: Rise.ai
Rise.ai is the longest-running specialist in this category, live on Shopify since 2014, with 763 reviews and a 4.7 rating. It’s also the deepest store credit tool here. Gift cards, cashback, refunds-to-credit, VIP and signup rewards, and referrals all run through a single branded customer wallet, and the app documents an AI Retention Agent that surfaces revenue opportunities inside the admin.
The Starter plan is $19.99/month and includes an advanced gift card program, manually issued store credit, and referrals, which covers most small-store needs. The catch is the order cap. Rise.ai prices by monthly store orders, not gift card orders. Starter is 100 monthly orders, Small-Business at $59.99/month is 400 orders, and Pro at $199.99/month is 2,000 orders. Any Shopify store with real traffic is on Small-Business or Pro, not Starter. Two features a gift card buyer notices (the Apply Store Credit button at checkout and bulk gift card creation) are gated behind the $199.99 Pro plan.
Pick Rise.ai when the job is store credit as a retention currency, not when the job is gifting. For gifting alone, Govalo or Gift Card Hero cost less and ship a better recipient experience. If you already run a points-based loyalty program, our AI loyalty and rewards apps for small Shopify DTC stores guide covers that side of the stack separately. In some cases a dedicated loyalty tool already issues store credit, so you can skip Rise.ai entirely.
The budget pick: Vify
Vify Professional Gift Cards is the cheapest paid tier in this ranking. The free plan covers email configuration, gift card management, a custom product page, and a custom redemption page. The Starter plan is $9.99/month on Basic Shopify and adds expiry reminders, custom email branding, bulk gift card import, and gift card value adjustment. Premium is $16.99/month on Shopify and Advanced Shopify; Ultimate is $29.99/month on Shopify Plus. The plan structure is tied to your Shopify tier, not your order volume, which keeps the monthly cost predictable.
The limits are what they look like. No store credit wallet, no cashback, no loyalty, and fewer documented integrations than Rise.ai or Govalo. The pitch is: a professional gift card experience at the lowest paid price, nothing more. For a small Basic Shopify store that just wants branded gift cards and expiry reminders, that’s a legitimate answer.
How to choose
The decision tree is short. If your goal is a better gifting experience and you’re small enough that a percentage fee reads as cheap insurance, pick Govalo. If you want a predictable flat monthly cost and the gifting-first feature set, pick Gift Card Hero. If the real job is refunds-to-store-credit and credit-based loyalty, pick Rise.ai, and expect to be on the $59.99 Small-Business plan rather than Starter once your order volume is real. If you want the lowest paid-tier price and you only need gift cards, pick Vify.
A few sanity checks before you install any of them. Confirm that the loyalty or referral app you already pay for isn’t already issuing store credit. Several loyalty tools do, and paying twice is the most common mistake we see. If gift cards are the goal and you also want to grow repeat revenue through bundles or referrals, our rankings of AI product bundle apps and AI referral program apps for Shopify cover those jobs with the same framing. And if you’re doing fewer than a handful of gift card orders a month, don’t install any of these yet. The native product is free, and the time to pay for a tool is when you can point to the revenue you’ll recover with it.
