If your Shopify store has fewer than 50 products and you’ve never touched meta tags or alt text, you probably don’t need any of these yet. The reason to install an SEO app is scale: dozens or hundreds of product and collection pages that need the same technical hygiene, and no time to touch each one by hand. That’s the store we compared for.
Who this is for
This guide is for founder-led and small-team Shopify DTC stores, roughly 50 to 500 SKUs, selling direct to consumers and relying on Google (and increasingly ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews) for organic discovery. If you’re a Shopify Plus brand with a dedicated SEO lead and an agency, your decision tree is different and these aren’t the right apps. If you’re pre-launch, skip this guide and get the free Google tools (Search Console, Analytics, Merchant Center) set up first. They cost nothing and no SEO app replaces them.
Our pick: Sherpas Smart SEO
Smart SEO wins on price-to-coverage. The developer’s Shopify App Store listing shows a free plan, Pro at $9.99/month, Business at $19.99/month, and Premium at $29.99/month, though more recent listing snapshots show the paid tiers at Pro $14.99/mo, Business $24.99/mo, Premium $49.99/mo with roughly 17% off on annual billing and a 7-day trial. Either way, Pro is the cheapest tier among the top-installed SEO apps that unlocks the full small-store checklist: bulk meta tag and alt tag optimization, JSON-LD structured data, page speed, bulk image optimization, 404 user hit detection, and the removal of duplicate micro-data.
The free tier is usable while you evaluate. The Free plan includes a 100-page broken-links check, 50 image optimizations, 20 AI generations, meta tag optimization, alt tag optimization, sitemap, and NoIndex tags, which is more than many apps give away. If you outgrow it, Pro doubles the AI generations to 200 and bumps image optimization to 1,000 a month, which is plenty for a sub-500-SKU catalog.
The honest trade-off: Smart SEO is metered. Overage charges kick in at 0.4¢ per broken link and 0.7¢ per image optimization beyond the Business plan’s included allowance, so a store with a very large or frequently updated catalog should check the math before committing. And backlink monitoring here’s lighter than a dedicated SEO platform. Use it as a signal, not a replacement for Google Search Console.
The free pick: Avada SEO & Image Optimizer
If your budget this quarter is zero, Avada SEO is the first install. The free plan includes 100 image optimizations, 20 audits, and 100 AI credits, plus structured data for business info and reviews, alt-tag generation, an HTML sitemap, 404 error detection, a meta-tag preview, and canonical tags, which is a wider free surface than any other app in this comparison. The listing carries a 4.9 rating across more than 6,300 reviews on the Shopify App Store, the largest verified review base in the category.
Pro is where the price picks up. Pro costs $34.95 per month, Enterprise costs $99 per month, and paid plans include a seven-day trial. Pro adds unlimited image optimization and on-page audits, instant indexing, 1,000 AI credits, pro structured data, a broken-link manager, a robots.txt editor, and an XML sitemap generator. For a store under 50 SKUs and a few hundred product images, the free plan can genuinely be enough for a year.
The reason it isn’t our top pick is the paid tier. If you’re going to pay, $34.95 buys you less schema range and fewer AI generations than Smart SEO at $14.99 or SearchPie at $39, so most stores either stay on Avada’s free plan or jump to a different app when they outgrow it.
The beginner’s pick: SearchPie
SearchPie is the easiest tool to recommend to a founder who has never opened Shopify’s SEO settings. It launched July 9, 2019, and the Starter plan is free with SEO health monitoring, breadcrumb and store schema, sitemap, image compression and CSS minification, bulk meta tags and ALT text with templates, AI-generated SEO tags and an LLMs.txt file, IndexNow, 404 detection on all pages, and 24/7 customer support with a response time under one minute. Live chat on the free plan is unusual in this category.
Pricing then jumps. Premium is $39/month (or $374.40/year with 20% off), and Enterprise is $99/month (or $950.40/year with 20% off). Premium adds price, rating, stock and FAQ schema, 500 image compressions, JS minification, auto-optimized tags, automatic 404 fixes, backlink submissions, and Search Console and Core Web Vitals tracking. The AEO features (AI search optimisation and an LLM.txt file) sit on the $99 Enterprise tier, which is a lot to pay for AI-search features that other apps offer earlier.
If your store is tiny and your main obstacle is confidence, SearchPie’s SERP preview and live chat are worth the entry. If you already know what meta tags and schema do, Smart SEO buys you more at a lower price.
The automation pick: Booster SEO
Booster SEO is the most-reviewed app in the category, but it earns that reputation on autopilot features that live on the paid tiers. Its App Store listing shows a 4.8 rating across 5,477 reviews, with Free, Pro at $39/month ($349/year with 25% off), and Premium at $69/month ($619/year with 25% off). The Pro plan adds meta title and description optimization, custom templates for all meta tags, Auto Pilot SEO fixes and monitoring, auto broken-link detection and fixes, Google rich snippets and structured data, automated Google sitemap submission, and AI-search-ready SEO. Premium adds image compression (5 GB storage/month), automated URL keyword optimization, auto image filename SEO, 365-day Search Console metrics, and bulk actions with professional PDF reports.
The honest trade-off is where features sit. Bulk meta tag optimisation, the thing most merchants install an SEO app to get, isn’t on the free plan, and $39 is the joint-highest entry price in this category. Image compression, URL keyword optimisation and 365 days of Search Console history wait for Premium at $69. If AutoPilot automation genuinely matters to you and you want hands-off SEO maintenance, Booster is defensible at $39. If you’re trying to minimise spend and still cover the small-store checklist, Smart SEO does more for less.
How to choose between them
The decision tree is simple. If your budget is zero and you’ve never had an SEO app, start with Avada SEO’s free plan and run its per-page audit. If you’re ready to pay and want the most coverage for the fewest dollars, install Smart SEO at $14.99. If you want 24/7 live chat and a friendly interface and $39 is fine, pick SearchPie. If you specifically want hands-off AutoPilot automation and have the budget, Booster SEO’s Pro plan is the one in the category built for that. Pick one. Running two together is usually a worse outcome than running the right one alone.
An SEO app is one piece of a small DTC store’s organic engine. The others are reviews that generate rich snippets and social proof (see our AI product review apps guide) and on-site merchandising that keeps visitors on the page long enough to buy (our AI product recommendation apps guide covers that). An SEO app clears the technical obstacles. Everything else is why someone sticks around once they land.
